A Multilevel Approach to Healing the Adrenal Glands

A Multilevel Approach to Healing the Adrenal Glands

The subtle creates the gross.

Challenges we experience in our physical existence (our bodies, health, lives, relationships) are simply mirroring an imbalance, dysfunction, or state of dis-ease in our subtler bodies (the emotional, mental, and spiritual layers).

Struggles with the adrenal glands and the hormones responsible for proper energy and circadian rhythms have their roots in stress – physiologically impacting the delicate hormonal dance between our brain and adrenals and energetically impacting our root chakra and all it metaphorically encompasses.

How does this happen?  Unprocessed trauma that makes us more susceptible to the ill-effects of daily stress.  Stress and trauma are compounding.  Undigested blockages stack on top of each other and the system’s vital energetic flow goes towards trying to manage the mountain of “foreign invaders” (the energetic and physiological residue of the compounding stress).

This means that daily maintenance required by the system on all levels is maintained only halfheartedly, or depending upon the stage of the undigested blockage, completely neglected.  Additionally, the traumas in question don’t necessarily have to happen to you in your lifetime; they can also be ancestral and handed down through the lineage.

This is how dis-ease manifests on the physical body.

The subtle bodies send their messages and warnings and we fail to pay attention, identify and honor the needs.  The subtle creates the gross, remember?  The subtle, and now dysfunctional, building blocks of our system on all levels create an undesired gross experience.

The most interesting part of the dis-ease process is how it manifests and in which area of our physical experience and how our physical body produces its signs and symptoms of dis-ease.

In cases of adrenal insufficiency (or “adrenal fatigue” as it’s more commonly known), there’s a chronic state of nervous system activation – hyper-vigilance, fear, survival-based operating, and doing anything to remain “safe.”  This is why many sufferers are also perfectionists with type-A personalities and relentless inner critics.  They may also be in the habit of engaging in “victim mode” and viewing the world as unsafe and predatory.

While dietary, lifestyle (proper exercise and stress management resources, for example), herbal and nutrient interventions can work wonders, they aren’t the panacea.

True healing must begin within and on the subtle levels so they can then create the desired gross experience.

You can’t heal anything while continuing to operate from the same paradigm that bred the current dysfunction.

Flower Essences and other energetic interventions used in conjunction with practices like Personal Alchemy, yield lasting and profound results.  For addressing issues in the root chakra (the space at the base of our spine and perineum that includes all basic human needs and survival and safety), tree medicine is typically the most potent.

a very brief guide to essences for healing the adrenal challenges:

  • Finding Stability & Safety: Red Cedar, Pecan, Magnolia, St. John’s Wort, Angelica, Potato
  • Issues with Perfectionism: Skullcap, Blue Vervain, Blue Spruce, Pine
  • Enhancing Self-Trust & Divine Connection: Prickly Pear, Passionflower, Magnolia
  • Releasing General Anger & Resentment: Thistles, Nettles

This is a very, very brief introduction into the many flower essences available to peel the layers of subtle wounds and create a more balanced physical experience.  It is always best to turn to an experienced, compassionate Flower Essence Therapist to guide your healing journey.

Additional Considerations:

  • Herbs & Botanicals. Mother Earth has provided all the medicine we need and while flower essences support the subtle bodies in creating the desired gross experience, herbs and botanicals offer more direct support to the physical while it is “catching up” and the subtle blocks are rebuilding it.
    • Adaptogens and nervines soothe a fried nervous system and support hormonal balance
      • Ashwagandha, licorice, reishi, holy basil, rhodiola, astralagus, chamomile, skullcap, lavender
  • Root Chakra Clearing & Healing practices. Practices such as Kundalini yoga, breath work, expressive arts therapy, somatic movement, journey and shadow work, and more can be very beneficial in healing and identifying the core story that is creating the physical imbalance.
  • Release what no longer serves you – but like, for real this time.
    • What outdated grudges or beliefs are you holding onto that no longer serve?
    • How do you view yourself?
    • Does your life, for the most part, bring you joy, contentment, and a sense of purpose?
    • Do you fully love and accept yourself, just as you are right now?
  • A thriving spiritual life and daily practice strengthens your connection to the divine within.  It is our divinity that sustains us and sparks our ability and desire to successfully heal our bodies and our lives.
    • How do you connect to the divine within?
    • Do you have a daily practice for feeding your spiritual body?
  • Your vessel is a sacred temple
    • Is your current lifestyle conducive to feelings of safety and stability?
    • Are you properly feeding your physical body?  “Properly” is different for everyone and fluctuates in any given season and life stage.
    • How do you deeply honor and care for yourself?

The physical body is a mirror.  What is yours telling you?  What needs to be addressed on the subtle level?  The physical body is slower than your subtle bodies as it’s created by these tiny, energetic building blocks over time.   Compassion, patience, and disciplined self-love are crucial during any healing process.

Working with an experienced plant medicine practitioner and intuitive mentor who can also guide in nutrition and appropriate lifestyle and supplementation will have your subtle and gross experiences regenerating in your desired frequency.

The Energies of Winter: Lifestyle, Movement, & Food

The Energies of Winter: Lifestyle, Movement, & Food

The light is returning.  At the Winter Solstice, despite the fact that it’s the darkest (and coldest) time it’ll be all year, we’re welcoming the return of the light once more.  This is the Wheel of the Year’s “New Moon” and a time for planting seeds in the darkness, the void, the place of no-thing from which all things manifest.

What are you ready to bring into your life?  What are you ready to manifest?  Think about little baby seeds planted into the soil.  Despite nothing happening above ground, there’s a lot happening below the surface.  The seeds are being cracked open, are activating their codes of becoming and growth, and are preparing for their journey ahead.  This is the energy of winter.

Ways to Support Yourself & Honor the Medicine of Winter

Lifestyle: Even though the light is returning, it’s freaking cold and dark.  We’re still in a reflective, introspective space.  Hibernating and rejuvenating are key for this time.  The more deeply you allow yourself to rest and restore, the better equipped your entire system will be in the coming year and seasons.  This is the time for replenishing our vital life force.  Do not miss it.  In ages past, Yule (now Christmas) was a time for gathering and merriment before hunkering down for the long, dark January ahead.  As Imbolc (now Groundhog Day) approaches, we can begin to feel the thaw taking place.  The days are growing a little longer and hope is returning.  Honor the stillness and the depth available here.

  • Make lots of clear plans with clearer action steps and at the time same time, don’t feel the need to hurriedly act upon them.  Again, the clearer you can allow yourself to become, the greater the reward when the time is right.  What do you deeply desire?  What needs to be done to allow the space for it to come true?  Dream, plan, prepare to act!
  • Continue choosing more restorative movement over higher intensity sessions in early winter.  Then, as Imbolc approaches, begin to tune in and feel your body’s desires begin to change.  Appetites may reduce and the desire to move more will begin returning as we make our way closer to spring.
  • Hands-on self-healing is a fast, effective, and pleasurable way to calm the system and deepen into stillness.  Hint: the stillness is where the clarity on your next steps lives!  Check out this guided video I made for you!
  • Prioritizing adequate rest (notice the desire to sleep a bit more during this time and honor it) is essential
  • Maintaining regular meal times supports blood sugar balance, energy levels, and digestion, and of course, all of this soothes the nervous system
  • Syncing with the sun as much as possible (i.e. really winding down at sunset and engaging in relaxing, nourishing activities from then until bedtime and then being up before sunrise)

Movement:  As much as being outside may feel daunting and totally undesirable, bundle up and head outdoors midday for a nice walk in nature.  Enjoy the brisk air and the sunlight – even if it’s just through clouds.

  • Walking is such an underrated form of movement and is truly the kindest and most effective.  It’s been shown to support the body through reducing stress hormones, lowering the risk of osteoporosis, and doing it outdoors has even more amazing benefits!
  • Yoga and rebounding are ideal right now to prevent stagnation in the muscles and lymphatic system.  Kundalini yoga and breath work is my absolute favorite technology.
  • Dancing is fantastic, also!  Many experience depressed and funky moods in winter and I know of no better way to quicken the blood, raise energy, and lift my spirits than putting on some music and just dancing it out.

Food: Simply, eat seasonally all the time and you can’t go wrong.  To say Nature is smart is such an understatement that it’s almost disrespectful.  We have all that we need to support our bodies and what they are undergoing as we mirror the Earth at any given moment.  Period.
What’s available to you right now?  Much of winter’s menu is similar to falls – root veggies like pumpkin, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, parsnips, turnips, carrots, beets, etc.; deep, mineral-rich, life-giving greens like collards, arugula, and kale; Brussels sprouts, apples, pears, cranberries, grapes, pomegranates, cauliflower, and more!  Mmmmm!  To check what’s in season locally for you, this is a great resource.  Focus on deeply pigmented produce right now to support the blood and circulation.

Herbs such as Echinacea for immune support and ginko biloba for circulation are great winter supports.  For deeper rejuvenation and restoration, beautiful adaptogens such as ashwagandha, mucuna, reishi mushrooms, and holy basil are lovely (under the guidance of an expert who’s working directly with you).

Need to kick a bug?  Try my favorite recipe:

1-2c Warm water

2-3T Apple cider vinegar

Small knob of fresh turmeric or about ½-1t powder

1-2t Raw organic honey

1 clove of garlic

pinch of cayenne pepper

pinch of black pepper

2-3 drops oil of oregano

Put in a blender and drink!

And of course, there are so many plant essences and gem elixirs to support you right now.  This is a good time to connect to your internal, liminal realms.  Passionflower essence, magnolia flower essence, Datura flower essence, mugwort flower essence, and crocus flower essence are perfect for connecting to our higher selves, our ancestors, and our dreams.

Enjoy this beautiful transition and all it teaches us.  Earth is our mirror and we are all in this spirally dance of life, death, birth, spring, summer, fall, winter.  Embrace the changes and dance the dance.  Honor your needs during this time and all that you are noticing.  Don’t miss a potent opportunity for reflection, dreaming, and planning.  I’d love to hear from you!  Please share with me and let me know how I may support you.

What is Whole Being Nourishment?

What is Whole Being Nourishment?

Mmm… imagine feeling more grounded, more self-trust, more self-love, more fluidity, more intention, more joy, more connection, more vitality, more energy, more purpose – THAT and more is what Whole Being Nourishment feels like to me.

We are complex, beautiful, multilayered creatures and by viewing ourselves as such, we are able to achieve deep healing from within. Through seeing ourselves as a Physical Body, an Emotional Body, a Mental Body, and a Spiritual or Energetic Body, we are more easily able to identify and meet our needs and support our health and well-being in all aspects. As I love saying to my clients, “It’s not enough to eat kale and go for a jog.” We must dig deep within, into the shadows, to understand our core essence and to love ourselves back to wholeness. In this upcoming video series, I’ll break down each of the four bodies and provide ways to nourish each. Get ready!

See A Nutritionist When You Don’t “Need” To

See A Nutritionist When You Don’t “Need” To

Seeing nutritionist shouldn’t be on a “need” basis.  A holistic health expert should be part of your sound preventative plan and self-care.  We’re not here solely for weight loss or to only provide medical nutrition therapy when you’re sick.   We don’t preach dogma (at least a good one won’t) and we certainly don’t scold or berate you!

Eating is one of the few things we have control over in life and I’m here to invite you to view that as empowering and to help take your nourishment game to the next level.  ALL you take in – not just food, but experiences, media, others’ energy, etc. – can be forms of nourishment. Endeavor to make your life delicious.  Often times, we don’t know some of the habits we have may be doing more harm than good, despite our best intentions.  The old adage, “What we don’t know, we don’t know” is so true and I am dedicated to being a trusted source of guidance, healing, and wisdom for you.

Some reasons you can benefit from an assessment include:

  • Catching your tendency towards nutrient deficiencies before they become an issue in your physical body
  • Support your needs when there’s family history of a disease(s) by ensuring your engaging in proactive dietary and lifestyle measures
  • Ensure you’re meeting your micro and macronutrient needs for your individual lifestyle
  • Get fresh ideas on how to bolster and vary your intake to avoid “food ruts”
  • Receive personalized guidance and education catered to YOU (not from all the noise out there)
  • Uncover possible nutrition related contributors to pesky symptoms like low energy, headaches, body aches, low stamina, and more

You have this one body and this one life, so live it fully.  So, you may not be “sick” or “overweight” or looking to overhaul your diet or life and in fact, you may feel great!  YES! Let’s keep you there!  If you are looking to improve your health, energy, support the healing of a health challenge, and more, then we can certainly help with that, as well.  Take your power back and ensure your life is nourished on every level!

How Outdated Core Beliefs Sabotage Our Health

How Outdated Core Beliefs Sabotage Our Health

ceeoxu1nzpw-sebastian-lpI’ve talked a lot about how our old beliefs and stories are inextricably linked to our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being in so many ways!  These outdated beliefs can often create blocks in our life and, among many other things, can prevent us from committing to our health and goals.  Old emotional and mental body beliefs hold us back, manifest in the physical body as dis-ease, and create subconscious patterns for the way we interact with others, view the world, react to situations, and treat ourselves.

How would it feel to mindfully interact with others, objectively view the world, respond (rather than react) to situations, and love yourself from an empowered place?  This is what happens when we’re able to identify, confront, and transmute these old imprints.

Be honest and examine your life.  We tend to have a few behaviors, traits, patterns, etc. about ourselves that we may not understand, particularly like, or that we feel are hindering our growth.  This may look like continuing to mindlessly eat despite the promises you make to yourself to practice mindful eating.  This may look like following through on that commitment to move your body for 30 minutes every day or meditating each morning or lovingly showing up for family members after a long day at work rather than coming home and being an ass.  The way you do one thing, is the way you do everything and these patterns show up in a variety of ways.

Until these things are addressed and shifted, their power will remain and there will be parts of us that are malnourished as our vital energy force goes to feed this parasitic form.

Some of the ways these stories can show up:

  • Seeking advice outside of yourself more than relying on your internal wisdom
  • Trying all the latest “fad diets” or exercise regimens
  • Fierce food cravings
  • Turning to substances, technology, food, sex, etc. to provide a (false) sense of nourishing yourself
  • Being unable to follow through on promises made to yourself
  • Pushing yourself too hard all the time
  • Experiencing a chronic feeling of dissatisfaction with yourself
  • Lashing out easily
  • Selling yourself short
  • Continuing to attract the same situations and types of people
  • Finding yourself complaining about the same things repeatedly

When it comes to having difficulty in creating the sustainable health and wellness shifts you desire, it’s often important to look beneath the surface and seek the counsel of an unbiased expert outsider who won’t cosign your BS and who can help you see blockages and then work through them with a variety of resources.  Creating manageable action steps tailored to your lifestyle is crucial!  Flower Essences can help to subtly shift the energetic imprint of these old beliefs and are especially powerful when simultaneously used while creating new habits.  We’re able to act from an empowered place that stems from self-love vs punishment and self-deprecation.  Above all, patience, self-compassion, and a fierce dedication to yourself will take you beyond what you ever thought possible for yourself.

Why More Isn’t Always Better & The Importance of Chilling

Why More Isn’t Always Better & The Importance of Chilling

d3bymnz0ank-alexander-redl

So, you want to improve your health, maybe lose weight, eat better, and generally take kinder care of yourself? Congratulations! How exciting!

For many people, this means going from 0 to 100, logging long, arduous hours at the gym, and restricting their eating all in the name of their goals.

Sure, this approach may yield initial results, but it’s certainly not sustainable on the physical, emotional, mental, or even spiritual body levels. Eventually this will result in burnout and either a plateau or worse – weight gain, giving up, and a return to the undesired health and lifestyle habits you sought to end in the first place.

No wonder so many people are stuck in a cycle of momentum/stagnation peppered with bouts of self-loathing! These are the people I help because this is who I used to be and because this way of living has deleterious impacts on all levels.
More isn’t always better, especially when it comes to exercise, and less isn’t the answer when it comes to food.  Pounding away on the treadmill? Restricting your eating and obsessing over calorie counts? Stop it.

This approach raises the stress hormone cortisol and makes the body hold on to everything because it thinks you’re under attack. From an evolutionary perspective, this makes sense. Our ancestors led harsh lives and survival was the name of the game. Wild animals, the elements, famine, disease, and the like were all real, daily threats. The body doesn’t know the difference between stressors that you may perceive as “good” (spin class) or “bad” (running for your life).  To the body, it’s all the same! So, while you’re freaking out in your car over traffic, the exact same physiological reactions are happening internally as when your ancestors were running for their lives from a saber-toothed. You can imagine that the body won’t want to do anything out of luxury or aesthetics in a state like this, such as “rest and digest,” reproduce, drop unnecessary weight, have healthy blood pressure and respiration, etc. In this state, the body is in a holding pattern because it’s in fear and when it’s in fear, optimal function won’t happen physiologically, which means it’s near impossible for the changes in physique to take place that you seek.

The most important part of the whole equation is to get your body out of stress mode and to shift into “rest and digest” mode. Only from this place does your body get the signal that energy may be used for repair, growth, healing, etc. and it doesn’t need to be reserved (AKA holding onto weight) because of impending doom.

How to make this shift into relaxation mode?  Choose to consciously live the majority of your day from this place!  Deep belly breathing is literally the quickest way to make this shift. Shaking off (literally – think about animals) stressful events also works wonders.  Staying well hydrated, eating enough for your particular needs, meditation, laughter, nature, and plenty of rest and sleep should all be part of any routine.

To create joyful, sustainable changes in your entire being, physical body included, a balanced approach to food and movement with adequate time for recovery and rejuvenation is the only way to go. An expert guide can help you objectively see where you may be pushing too hard, missing out on necessary foods and nutrients because you’re caught in the calorie-counting trap, and can suggest personalized self-care rituals to enhance the experience of “rest and digest” – where true transformation happens in all bodies! Flower Essences also help to seal in this new way of being, enhance feelings of ease, and help you remove beliefs around needing to always push yourself.

If the idea of doing less and settling into a space of ease scares you, please let’s talk.
I have been there and seen firsthand the horrible impacts of this lifestyle on my own body and sanity and I would love to help you cultivate a more nourishing way of being!
